With Xero, you can add an unlimited number of users to your account at each subscription level. This is a notable feature for accounting software; often, lower-tier plans allow fewer users while only higher-tier plans allow unlimited users. It gives small business owners access to Xero’s suite of tools to help manage their business and their people processes in one plan. The Ultimate plan includes all Xero’s core accounting features plus tools for advanced analytics, employee management and multi-currency. Big data is changing businesses, affecting operations more each year. Growing businesses need data presented in an easily digestible manner so business owners can act on the insights.

This gives Xero an edge over competitors that don’t offer such generous terms. Xero partners with Gusto to add more HR functions, such as payroll services. With Gusto, you can onboard new hires, administer employee benefits, track hours and paid time off, run payroll, and automatically file payroll taxes. Except for a few minor inconveniences, we were impressed with Xero’s invoicing capabilities.

Xero is a great option for large teams and small- to medium-sized businesses that need high-level accounting systems. It’s also a good fit if you want to integrate Gusto Payroll to your accounting platform. It allows three users for its Essentials plan ($55 per month) and 25 users for its top plan, the Advanced ($200 per month).

While Xero’s lowest-tiered plan allows you to send and approve up to 20 invoices, partner apps that initiate transactions can automatically contribute to your limit. This is because QuickBooks was designed for small businesses that might not have an accounting background, whereas Xero was designed with accountants and bookkeepers in mind. QuickBooks is also better for businesses that need to track inventory, as it has built-in inventory management features. Xero also has inventory management, but it’s not one of its core functions.

FreshBooks charges $17 per month and QuickBooks charges $30 per month). However, the best option and price point will depend on the specific capabilities and features you are looking for. We encourage you to research and compare multiple accounting software products before choosing one. Includes project tracking tools in most expensive plan; has transaction tracking tags; lacks industry-specific reports; users with multiple businesses must pay for separate subscriptions. Also included in the Ultimate plan is Xero Analytics Plus, a set of tools to help small businesses gain a deeper understanding of how their business may be performing, and plan ahead.

After a 30-day trial period, Xero will bill a monthly charge of $13 per month for the Early plan, $37 per month for the Growing plan and $70 per month for the Established plan. For free invoicing platforms, consider times interest earned ratio Zoho Invoice, Square Invoices or PayPal Invoicing, although these platforms provide fewer capabilities.
